Fran Hathaway earned a master's degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. After graduation, she joined the editorial staff of TOGETHER magazine and free-lanced for magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post. During that time, she married Harve, her childhood sweetheart, a medical student at Northwestern University Medical School.
When TOGETHER moved its offices, Fran was asked to start a magazine for the employment agency industry, though she warned the publisher that doing so would be very costly. Nonetheless, from a bare desk and telephone, she created PERSONNEL WORLD.
She next accepted a job on the editorial staff of World Book Encyclopedia in Chicago's Merchandise Mart. Two years later, she was offered a top editorial position but announced she was leaving to have their first child.
After Harve completed his M.D.. the family moved to Patrick Air Force Base near Cape Canaveral, Florida, where for two years, he provided obstetrics and gynecology care at the base hospital. While raising their three children, Fran wrote for the TODAY newspaper in Orlando. She also provided profiles of inspiring women whose husbands were serving in Southeast Asia.
Then they settled in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where Harve went into private practice and Fran began writing for The Palm Beach Post. It was the start of a career during which she served as feature editor, columnist and editorial board member.
When she left The Post, Fran started Lifestories, a service that helps people write their autobiographies. Her first novel, "Celestina," was published in 2015. The second, "Conversations at Sunset," was published in 2016.
Fran also was active in community affairs, helping to start Executive Women of the Palm Beaches and serving on boards such as Palm Healthcare Foundation.
