born in Kanjiža in 1940. Poet, storyteller, dramatist, essayist. His works have been translated to Serbian, German, Polish, English, Dutch, Slovak, French, Italian. Studied Hungarian Language and Literature in Novi Sad and Philosophy in Zagreb. Initiator and editor-in-chief of the literary supplement Symposion, and then journal Uj Symposion. Put on probation as the editor for publishing texts incriminated as enemy propaganda. Editor at Radio Novi Sad in Hungarian until retirement . The last president of the Union of Writers of Yugoslavia.
Initiator of Ex Symposion in Veszprem . Recipient of the most significant literary awards in the former Yugoslavia – twice Hid’s prize , Szirmai Award , Todor Manojlović Award , and in Hungary – Attila Jozsef , Endre Ady , Tibor Dery Milen Fuest , Sandor Weores , Miklos Radnoti . Elected to the Hungarian Academy of Literature and Arts in 1998. Received the highest Hungarian state award, the Kossuth Prize, in 2007.
The following plays were set on the stage of the Novi Sad Theatre – Újvidéki Színház Végeladás , 1979; ; Bayer-Aspirin, 1982; Briliáns , 1985, 1991; Paripacitron , 1991; on the stage of Jurta Theatre in Budapest Mammoth Graveyard, 1988; collection of plays Clearance – the Last Performance), 1997.
