Prior to entering graduate school, Glynis Cowell taught in North Carolina public schools for six years. After completing her doctoral studies, she coordinated the Spanish Language Program in the Department of Romance Studies, Duke University, for three years before joining the Chapel Hill faculty in 1994 as Director of the Spanish Language Program. In this capacity, she is responsible for the oversight and coordination of all Spanish language courses, assisted by faculty course coordinators. She is also responsible for the training and supervision of graduate teaching fellows. She teaches undergraduate courses in Spanish as well as team-teaches the graduate pedagogy course, “Theories and Techniques of Teaching Foreign Languages”. Cowell also currently serves as the Director of Undergraduate Studies for our department, and as a faculty assistant dean in the Academic Advising Program. She has given numerous presentations and delivered papers at state, regional, national, and international conferences, primarily on topics related to foreign language teaching and learning including language acquisition, language for special purposes and the role of technology in learning.
