Carol Pettersen was born at Gnowangerup Mission and raised in the bush at Jerramungup in a family of seventeen, but has spent most of her life on her traditional ‘country’ of Albany, Western Australia. She identifies as a Traditional Owner with the Menang and Gnudju peoples of the south coast of Western Australia. She loves writing and it has been a form of escape and a way of relieving painful episodes in her life. She has long been involved in Indigenous Affairs and been appointed to many federal and state government advisory bodies, in addition to being awarded National NAIDOC Female Elder of the Year in 2008.
