Disaster Trip describes a future trip from Kansas City to inside the beltway. The interstate highway system has collapsed along with most of the U.S. economy; therefore, most of the trip is made by barge up and down the major river systems. Chinese currency has replaced the dollar as the major currency of North America, and one of the main characters is a Chinese national who works for the Shanghai Bank of Kansas City and who is instructed to destroy a high speed printing press counterfeiting the Chinese currency which operates inside the beltway. The rump state of the U.S. refuses to recognize China or accept their diplomats in any way even though most of the remnant commerce in North America flows through Chinese hands.
