The Princess and the Lion

The Princess and the Lion

Elizabeth Coatsworth
3.3/5 ( ratings)
To prevent civil war among brothers over the succession to the throne, the numerous sons of the king of Abyssinia were required to live out their lives in the Prison of Princes—with one exception. The prince chosen by the king as his successor would one day be brought down from the mountaintop to the palace. Among the princes was Michael, brother of Princess Mariam, and the least likely to be chosen for he was without clansmen or influence at court.
Mariam and two faithful servants plotted secretly to set Michael free, but their conspiracy turned back on them when the king named Michael as his heir. With little time to achieve her purpose, Mariam disguised herself and her mule, and followed by the palace lion, set off to divert Michael from his attempt to escape. Crocodile-infested waters, vast, lonely expanses, even a nearly disastrous encounter with a slave caravan could not deter this spirited young princess from her purpose. Her story is an inspiring one, a story that takes place in an authentic historical setting rich in detail, mystery, and adventure.
