Contrary to the synopsis this issue has nothing at all to do with glasnost. It is considerably better than most issues of Granta though because there are at least four pieces worth reading. In a class of its own, and making this issue genuinely worthwhile, is Rian Malans study of Msinga, the story of Neil and Creina Alcock. Five stars for that, three for Fisk and Raban, three for the short pieces by Patricia Highsmith and Roger Garfitt. Some nice photos from Poland. Skip the rest.
