The Anglican clergyman, Canon Eric James was born in 1925. He was formerly Chaplain of Trinity College, Cambridge, Preacher to Gray's Inn, Director of Christian Action and Chaplain to HM the Queen. He is well-known as a preacher, broadcaster, especially on Radio 4's Thought for the Day, and is the author of many best-selling books. He lives in retirement in London. In 1972, as a result of a particularly sad situation, my good friend David Sheppard, then Bishop of Woolwich, suggested that 'I needed to get right away'. This is the journal of the six-month journey I made - to Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, The Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Guinea, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Sri Lanka and home. T S Eliot's wonderful aphorism Old Men Ought to be Explorers first inspired me when I was fifteen. It has continued to inspire me for over sixty years - into my eighties.
