For the story of Laura and Mila only, I’d give this short story a solid 4. The author calls this an “anti-romance romance” and that is so what you’d think. These best friends are lovely, with Mila confident and Laura confused and unsure . Their third BFF, Jaden, is the romance-believer. The three are part of the debate team and are assigned the Pro-Valentine position. A teasing jab on the part of Jaden sends the “Ice Queen” into tears, followed by an un-Laura-like rage. What is up?
This part of it was so engaging. Where I had questions concerned Jaden, I felt that was left so open and the teacher gave up too easily. It sounds dangerous and that left me a little uncomfortable. Possibly there is more coming to the story, which would be wonderful.
Recommended for readers of young adult, romantic despite Laura’s assurances to the contrary.
