A FIGHTING LIFE

GREAT NORTHERN BOOKS

He is the genius behind the genius. Enzo Calzaghe never fought in the ring, but he still turned his son Joe into one of the top ten boxers on the planet – a World Champion with a record of 46 unbeaten fights. Now Enzo tells the extraordinary behind-the-scenes story of his flamboyant career and the making of a fight legend.
It’s much more than a round-by-round tale of ropes and gloves, and grit and glory.
For the first time Enzo opens the family album and discloses intimate details of his bruising upbringing in Sardinia, where the Mafia lurked on every corner and his father practised ‘tough love’. He talks of fleeing Italy to hitch-hike and busk his way around Europe. He charts his improbable rise from slaving as a waiter cum-cook in a seaside restaurant to support many big name chart stars such as Shirley Bassey and Bucks Fizz.
Not only does it provide a unique insight into the father and son relationship that conquered boxing, but also shows how the heart and determination of one self-made man serves as an example for anyone who craves success and is prepared to overcome near-impossible odds to achieve it.
‘I’m a life fighter,’ he says. This book proves it.

“Enzo Calzaghe is a boxing man through and through. He proved that a trainer and boxer relationship between a father and son really does and can work. Along with training a host of other champions, he will probably be remembered for training and producing arguably Britain’s greatest ever boxer.”
RICKY HATTON

“We’ve always joked in the Calzaghe family that Dad’s life would make a great movie... But my message to you is that Enzo Calzaghe is completely unique. He doesn’t conform to convention in any way imaginable and he is consumed with enthusiasm for life.”
JOE CALZAGHE

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Enzo Calzaghe MBE is the most decorated trainer in the history of British boxing. He was the trainer for his son Joe in all 46 of his professional fights and has also taken Gavin Rees and Enzo Maccarinelli to world titles. He won an unprecedented 17 awards for his efforts including BBC Sports Personality trainer of the year. Enzo is also a keen musician and budding film maker and lives in Pentwynmawr with his wife Jackie.

ABOUT THE CO-AUTHOR: Michael Pearlman has been the boxing and football writer for the South Wales Argus since 2003.
During that time he had unlimited access to the Team Calzaghe gym and produced a weekly column with Joe Calzaghe. He has covered the gym’s boxers’ fights across the UK and in America.
Michael lives with girlfriend Alison in Cardiff and insists writing this book was a doddle in comparison to the agony of supporting Tottenham Hotspur.
