Dark’s only concern is his younger brother, DAVID, who envies Dark’s holdings and desires to make them his own. But her betrothed, LORD SWAYER, doesn’t wed her. Instead he sends her away to serve out a debt he owes to his liege lord for gambling. A contract, with many shackling clauses, binding her into one year’s labor, is what Torlan signs when she arrives at Dark Castle.
Torlan, less than thrilled with her father’s choice of husband, realizes the delay might be beneficial. It gives her the chance to find a way out of the marriage and a safe haven from her father. If she serves the debt honorably and maintain her virtue, perhaps she could make a love match when she is freed. Before she signs the contract she demands protection from any command to enter Dark’s or any other man’s bed.
Torlan gains the Master’s guarantee that she will not be forced to his bed, but that doesn’t stop Dark from trying to sway her there. The contract can’t protect her from herself as she begins to wonder what it might be like to be in the arms of a good man.
Dark has never met a woman as unique as his beautiful debtor. Not only does she stir his lust with her flashing blue eyes and lush body, but she fires his temper with bold words, lights his imagination with her intelligence and pulls him from his gloomy world with her smiles and laughter. Where he once only wanted her body in his bed, Dark now finds he wants her bold passions and strength there too.
Discovering she is now part of a complicated plot to unseat the only caring man she has ever know, Torlan sets to work to undermine everything done to bring down dark. She knows though that as much as she might want to give her heart to him, when all is said and done they very well could be lost to each other.
