A Suitcase of Lies: A tale of hatred, murder, revenge and love set in war torn Lebanon

A Suitcase of Lies: A tale of hatred, murder, revenge and love set in war torn Lebanon

Heather Pavitt
4/5 ( ratings)
Samir returns to his home in the Shatila Palestinian refugee camp in the southern suburbs of Beirut, reaching the camp in the aftermath of the September 1982 massacre. There he discovers his beloved grandfather brutally murdered. The killers, right-wing Christian militiamen, are still within the camp but Samir finds one survivor, Nada, a six-year old girl and together they make their terrifying escape.

Did the militiamen see them? Can the killers identify Samir? How will Samir avoid the same fate as others murdered in the horrific killing spree?

Both Samir and Nada have to face the trauma of their experiences and the loss of their loved ones. They are helped by Nazir, who runs an orphanage in the Lebanese mountains and Sheik Hassan and his daughter, Bassima.

In coming to terms with the death of his grandfather Samir collects his grandfather’s suitcase from the camp. Inside this suitcase are all his grandfather’s papers, photographs and the old iron key to their home in Palestine –Samir’s family history. It is in this suitcase that Samir uncovers a secret that sends him on a desperate journey.

The story is intertwined within the complex political backdrop of the Middle East and is set between two real events that took place: on 16-18th September 1982 up to 2,000 people were massacred in the refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila, and in April 1983, a suicide bomber drove a truck into the American Embassy in Beirut, killing 63 people including many from the Middle East contingent of the CIA.

The exotic setting provides a contrast between the beauty of the Lebanese mountains and the historic ruins of Baalbek against the horror and destruction of Beirut, the deaths of many innocent people, the Lebanese civil war and effects of the 1982 Israeli invasion.

This fast-paced adventure explores the trauma faced by ordinary people in times of war and the hopelessness and futility of religious bigotry, hatred and revenge. This is a heart-wrenching story that shows, despite everything, how love can survive and heal.
