Two decades after the mobile phone’s introduction, there are now 5 billion mobile phones users in the world, making that 80% of the world’s population. In these 5 billion users, 1.08 billion are smartphone users, and 91.4 million are from the United States.

This projected number of smartphone users is expected to increase by 1.82 billion this year. Moreover, 1.3 million Android activations are being made every day, so much so that more android phones are being activated than babies being born .

Smartphone Competitive Landscape
There are five major brands competing in the smartphone market. They are Googe’s Android, iPhone, RIM, Microsoft, and Symbian. Android is the market leader, holding 46.9% of the smartphone platform market shares in 2011. The market shares are followed by the iPhone with 28.7%, RIM with 16.6%, Microsoft with 5.2%, and Symbian with 1.5%.

In terms of mobile apps, more than 1.5 million apps are available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Stores, and more than 60% of those apps in the Apple App Store have never been downloaded, not even once.

On average, each smartphone user runs 41 apps. And of those downloaded apps, 1 out of 4 is abandoned after the initial use.
