I have to thank the Trustees for extending to me the time allowed for the publication of the Lectures. The delay has enabled me to return Once and again, as I was desirous of doing, in something of the attitude of a critic of my own positions. When one's conclusions do not agree with the current Views of those who are regarded as authorities, it becomes him at least not to be rash in the publi cation of them.
