William Shakespeare: Timon of Athens

William Shakespeare: Timon of Athens

A.D. Nuttall
0/5 ( ratings)
Originally published in 1989, and now available as an ebook for the first time, this study was initially prompted by Richard Pasco’s seminal 1980 performance as Timon at The Other Place in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Possibly unfinished, probably a collaboration , Timon of Athens is certainly one of Shakespeare’s more problematic plays. Charting Timon’s journey from generous benefactor to sub-human misanthrope, the structure and language appear to the audience or the reader of the play at first sight distancing and spare.

Nuttall’s incisive and intellectually rigorous analysis argues that this awkwardness is not inadvertent, but serves a profound purpose in enriching interpretation of the drama. His breadth of scholarship, encompassing religion, oratory, economics and attitudes to usury, provides a deep understanding of the richness of this austere play and its oddly violent emotions – an understanding that is invaluable to both scholars and actors alike. Almost an actor’s handbook, this is a must-read for anyone cast in the role.
