The Daftest Journey

The Daftest Journey

Daphne Martin-Heyring
4/5 ( ratings)
Colour pics on a website complement 112 lively B&W text illustrations. At the age of 6 weeks and 12 hours, Bruce sets out, in a fish basket, to traverse the entire continent of Africa. To assist him in this arduous 1971 undertaking he takes with him two slaves: Bob, his father, a Scottish Chartered Accountant, and his mother, Daphne, a university lecturer. The motive power for the fish basket is a short-wheel-based Land Rover, called Pythagoras. Humorous/ exciting/ dangerous events come vividly to life as the true story of The Daftest Journey unfolds. The little family races death and penury, but battles on from Malawi via Mallorca to Scotland. Conditions are unbelievable, and roads more 'imaginary' than negotiable. They plan to take a boat from Britain to Cape Town, and from there to drive north, back to their home in Malawi. Do they finally make it to their patiently waiting dog? A series of incredible adventures!
