Pete “Maz” Mazewski is a beloved Chicago jazzman, of Polish extraction, drawing to the end of a prolific career. One morning he wakes up in Chicago and feels an irrepressible urge to head south on the train. He ends up in New Orleans, a city in the grip of a vernacular jazz renaissance and a crime wave in the late 1980s. Experiencing an escalating series of violent attacks, he yet feels rejuvenated, almost youthful again. His quest for musical and sensual intensity leads to new heights of ecstasy and danger, as the racial tension he’s resisted all his life finally blows up in his face.
