Such was her appearance, as prepared to be the miser able dungeon for hundreds of poor captives, taken during the war. Her fame spread far and wide, and her very name was an object of terror, for she was looked upon as nothing less than a charnel-house. The number of per sons who perished ou board of her from disease, hunger ma bad treatmenfienerally, was almost incredible. Of those who were confined within her walls, but few, com paratively, ever returned to their homes. Occas1onally a poor su'fi'erer would escape to tell his dismal story to his countrymen, but such instances were rare.
