Since I've read and thoroughly enjoyed many books by Lisa Jackson, I was eager to see this new book. However, this book is actually a reissue of two romance novellas that she wrote and published in the 1980's. One of things that really jumped out me while I was reading these books were how much we rely on cell phones today. Much of the drama in these two connected romances were caused by not being able to reach the other by phone! Readers today may not recognize this as contemporary romance as t...
I usually love reading Lisa Jackson books for the mystery and suspense and keeping me on the edge of my seat. This book was far from what I was expecting from such a talented author. It was a story full of romance and second chances not mystery/suspense. I actually skimmed 1/2 of the book because it was just plain slow and boring. Would definitely not recommend. Thank you netgalley for letting me give an honest review of this book.
Backlash is a reissue of two books in one volume by Lisa Jackson written 30 years ago. The books are 'Aftermath' and 'Tender Trap'. They feature two brothers who return to Montana reluctantly to tend to their parents' ranch. Both left lovers behind years before so both are stories of second chance romance. I enjoyed both although they are somewhat dated and the endings were rushed.
In this release bu Lisa Jackson, Backlash is a re-release of previous novels, Tender Trap and Aftermath. In the first book, Denver McLean returns home because his uncle died and left his ranch to him and his brother Colton. Denver is not happy with this because his history is tragic. Seven years previously there was a fire and his parents died, and he was seriously injured. Meanwhile, his old flame, Tessa Kramer, wants to buy the ranch. Thing is, Colton is nowhere to be found, so Denver
Ugh. Read as much as I’m going to (about 100 pages). DNF. I didn’t expect great literature, just a fast paced, entertaining mystery. Instead it was a “romance,” if you can call a novel wherein an immature man with little to no impulse control trembles and groans and moans about frustrated desire, a man who uses his physicality to overpower and intimidate a woman (throwing her over his shoulder, painfully backing her into a tree, grabbing and mauling her when she’s clearly said no) a “romance.” I...
Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by the Author and Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an fair and honest review.1989 was a world away and a genre away from what Lisa Jackson writes these days. I usually love reading this old stuff. They shows me an authors growth and progression, even though these books can still be intense and filled with angst, just like the plots that now make up the romance genre. Both of these books follow a similar formula: Teen love gone wrong; two brothers who fl...
I’m not sure whether I didn’t read the blurb at all or just skimmed through it but this book was not what I expected it to be. I read a couple of books by this author and generally liked them, I thought this time that I was requesting a mystery and it turned out to be the kind of romances I don’t like to read. It is actually a reissue of two books published separately in the eighties collected together in the same edition. From my humble point of view that wasn’t a good decision. The first story...
Dear Reader, Montana has provided the setting for some of my favorite stories. In the late 1980s I wrote Tender Trap and Aftermath featuring Denver and Colton McLean—two brothers returning to their family ranch after years away, confronting the secrets left behind. I’m thrilled that they’re now available in one volume, with a striking new cover and title, Backlash . . . I was lucky enough to get an arc of this book and enjoyed it Tessa was 19 and in love. On a horseback ride she gave her all to
These two stories are re-issues, but I always enjoy stories by Lisa Jackson. Denver and Colton have had their lives and family torn apart. Both leave home after a tragedy and have no intention of ever going back. There is a lot of suspicion going around about who started the fire that injured Denver and killed his parents. Colton blames Tessa and her father. Denver was just getting ready to propose to Tessa when the fire happened and then he just left town without a word. Seven years later he is...
I loved this book! I loved Denver and I hated how bitter he was towards Tessa and her father. I love how after he comes back and discovers Tessa is running the farm and how she has bought her own horses. I hate how he treats her and her father badly and blames them for the fire that burned down part of the farm years ago. I love how he forgives Tessa and how they finally get the truth. I hate that it was Tessa's brother who was responsible. I love how they become engaged and get married. I loved...
Enjoyed the first half of Backlash. Tessa and Denver where believable characters. Their love story was to an extent believable. Tessa' love for her horse's is wonderful. The sacrifices she is willing to make with them for her true love are heart wrenching. The second half of the story is almost a carbon copy of the first half. Except it involves Denver's younger brother, Colton and his first love Cassie. It was a refreshing change of pace to have the country setting. I will be looking for more boo...
Backlash is comprised of two stories, Aftermath and Tender Trap, written in the 1980s. Both are second chance romance stories involving two brothers who return home to Montana after 7 years. Each has an old flame with a broken heart. Will the brothers find love again, or is it too late? Both stories are engaging and entertaining. The characters are likeable and relatable. Overall a good read of some different type stories from the author. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest
I've never read this author, and i am pleased as pie that i was given an arc to read this one. I really enjoyed both the characters and writing. The plot was great and I will deferentially check out the other authors work.
3.5 Stars Backlash is comprised of two stories, Aftermath and Tender Trap. I enjoyed these stories, the characters interaction and the second chance storylines kept me engaged throughout.
I DNF'd this shortly after starting. Just wasn't my writing style. This was my first time reading a Lisa Jackson novel. I gave it a solid try, but couldn't get through it. It may be because it's an older novel and reads like that.
Normally I like Lisa Jackson's books and rarely post a review but was so disappointed with this book that I am posting. First off so many inaccuracies when it comes to the veterinary character.. A vet doing large animal work wearing a skirt for one. For another there is no controversy over the Strangles vaccine. For another why would a vet comment that she doesn't want a horse to get dehydrated when she could tube with electrolytes or give intravenous fluids or refer to an emergency center. Anot...
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this booktwo stories back to back, a re-release of books first published in the 80s...no internet or mobile phonestwo brothers estranged from each other, their parents killed in a fire that ended with one of the brothers nearly dying and needing plastic surgerythe other brother went on to become a photo journalist in dangerous places, he had never been home since the fire that killed his parentseach story is about the brother ho...
Groan!! I thought I was buying a suspense novel! The characters in this ridiculous 'romantic' novel were immature, narcissistic and unbearably shallow.. The men were cowards who enjoyed pushing women around. In actuality, this wasn't a single book but 2 books that mirrored each other so much they were identical; same shallow characters, same emotionally stunted women, same destructive men, identical weak families..I could go on and on but I'll do what the author should have, but never did, I wil...
I had a hard time getting into this book and never finished it. I got up to page 100 and can’t finish it. I love Lisa Jackson but this is a reissue of stories she wrote in the 1980’s. I love her new works but the old reissued books are boring and I know she had evolved so much as a writer since she started. I wish they would really mark these reissues since I have bought a few and couldn’t finish any of them.
This was much different than what I am used to with any Lisa Jackson book that I have read thus far. From what I understand this is two books from her earlier works that she reworked into one book. This was a lot more "romance" heavy than her usual mystery/thriller/with a touch of romance that I'm used to. Not to say that that is the main reason I didn't like it. Far from it. It was more so that the romance portrayed felt very toxic - in the first part more so than the second. The second half ro...
There are two books in this one. The first is Aftermath and deals with the aftermath of a barn fire that claimed the parents and several horses belonging to Denver and Colton McLean. They both left the area soon after and the ranch was run by Curtis Kramer and his daughter Tessa. Tessa loved Denver but he would not see or talk to her. Now he was back after seven years and wants to pick up where they had left off but she thinks he will return to LA and leave again. The second book is Tender Trap
Backlash by Lisa Jackson is one hell of a romantic suspense novel. There were hints by some of the main characters but there was also that not so sure feeling too. Two families are torn apart by a fire that destroyed everything. Hatred, blame, and anger on the rise the McLean men are unforgiving. One brother convinces that other that his love is guilty of the their family tragedy. Yet, something doesn't set right. Tessa is the daughter of the foreman of the ranch. She loves horses as much as Cas...
Two full length books for the price of one. Two brothers left town amid betrayal & dishonesty. Two women were left behind broken & destroyed. Now they all have a second chance. Will they allow old grudges & new turmoil to keep them apart or will they find a way to forgive & move on?These books are heavier on romance than on the mystery but it really enjoyed them. They are both second chance romance stories. The characters are well developed & three dimensional. The women were destroyed when they...
This was really not my kind of book so i struggle to rate this, being a Lisa Jackson novel i was expecting at least some for of mystery or suspense and this was really a romance / almost soft core erotica book. With no real strong plot other than falling in love i found the book dull and slow, and the second book almost repetitive with just character name changed. If just reading at a slow pace about star crossed players falling in love if your jam then you will probably like this. I only rated
SO DISAPPOINTED. here I thought "oh my goodness. A NEW BOOK!!!!!. She wrote a new one. YAY!!NOPE.instead it a republished book from the '80's'. UGH.I loath authors when they republish old works. Especially romance novels. Oh they are old and sappy romance Sh*t. I personally don't like her works of romance. If I want that I'll buy Harliquin books. It goes with Nora Robert's and Sandra Brown. If there's more romance in the book than anything else. Even suspense and thrills..... ITS A FU*KIN' ROMANC...
This book has the two books, Tender Trap and Aftermath. This is about Colton and Denver McLean, brothers that have a lot of bad memories since a fire claimed their parents lives, and now that their uncle has passed away they are the owners of the house and have to come home and do something with the house. There is also a girl involved, whom is running the ranch along with her father and its falling apart and about to go back to the bank or non payment of taxes. Lots and lots of tension, not onl...
I gave "Backlash" by Lisa Jackson three stars. I think one of the only reasons I actually finished the book was because of the horses. I didn't realize when I started the book that it was originally two books (guess I should have paid more attention to the note at the top of the back cover) When I finished the section on Denver and Tessa, I wasn't even sure I wanted to finish the book, however the writing was not bad enough for me to put the book down. In reality, the book is a romance with a hi...
Some may like this. And from the ratings, it looks like many actually do. But it sure was not for me! Now I've never read any Harlequin Romances, but this book exemplifies what I think they are like. If you enjoy soft, squishy porn, you may like this one. She hates him... she loves him. He hates her... he loves her. If he had less self-control he would have raped her. As it is, there's breast kissing... through clothing no less!To be fair, I did not read the whole book. I couldn't force myself t...
This is a compilation of two books. It was wonderful to be able to read both books together. Aftermath and Tender Trap are second chance romances. Each of two brothers after experiencing devastating loss and heartbreak left behind young women to whom they treated unjustly and broke their hearts. There’s mystery in both books. Each man must look into their souls and decide which is more important, bitterness and revenge or if it’s love. I received an advance review copy from NetGalley for an hone...
Backlash is a SUPER AMAZING story that GRABS you from the very first page. I absolutely LOVED this story that kept me guessing up until the end. This book is actually Devon’s story then Colton’s. It’s two stories about the 2 brothers and their feuds they had with all of the other ranchers. The loss of their parents plays a big role of how these two young men grow up without their parents and the loves of their lives. But first they have to get to the bottom of the fire and WHO started it....that...
