The Conquest of Mount Cook, and Other Climbs: An Account of Four Seasons' Mountaineering on the Southern Alps of New Zealand (The Adventuresses Club Press Book 1)

The Conquest of Mount Cook, and Other Climbs: An Account of Four Seasons' Mountaineering on the Southern Alps of New Zealand (The Adventuresses Club Press Book 1)

"…so now, five years after my first fight for individual freedom, the girl climber at the Hermitage need expect nothing worse than raised eyebrows when she starts out unchaperoned and clad in climbing costume. It is some consolation to have achieved as much as this, and to have blazed one more little path through ignorance and convention, and added one tiny spark to the ever-growing beacon lighted by the women of this generation to help their fellow-travellers climb out of the dark woods and valleys of conventional tradition and gain the fresh, invigorating air and wider view-point of the mountain-tops.”
Freda Du Faur, Australia's first female mountaineer, was the first woman to summit Aoraki/Mt. Cook, and became, for a brief period of time, the top amateur climber in the world. Fighting against prejudice, Du Faur pursued her passion for the high peaks, and wrote this stirring memoir of bold adventure.

Unabridged, with a foreword by K.L. Webber.

The Adventuresses Club Press is dedicated to popularising the achievements of both historic and contemporary women. In the digital age, it is impossible to excuse the invisibility of our historic sisters, and we at the Adventuresses Club are determined to ensure that the erasure of women's achievements from the historic record is reversed.

Our original focus on women's achievements was in the fields of exploration and adventure. Over time, this will expand to include important fictional works by women and women-presenting authors. Intersectionality is a key value of The Adventuresses Club, and we continuously attempt to provide intersectional feminist discourse on a field which has been historically limited to middle-class white women, by representing the works of women from non-European backgrounds wherever possible.
