Somewhere in the middle of the second story of this Edition, I thought, "man these are really long stories this time around." Flipping to the front - "Longform Essays and Stories." Yes folks, I am super observant sometime. Though long, I thought the Fall 2018 Edition of Ploughshares was a strong entry. The edition kicks off with The Blue River Hotel by Stephen Henighan of a Canadian-Guatemalan man who spends time in Guatemala teaching students about the country and living sort of a split life
Another strong edition of Ploughshares. I so love the breadth and depth and consistent quality of this quarterly. The fall edition did not disappoint. I was impressed by all the short fiction (Henighan, McCorkle, Lunstrum, O'Callaghan, Bienen, Sibara and Owen King.Non-fiction was as strong - Gee's tribute to James Alan McPherson and Georgi Markov's "Prostitution" and "Wastewater." Don't have time to detail each now, but I found myself stealing every moment I could to read.Much here to think about...
Favorite stories: Old School by Allen Gee & The Man on the Beach by Josie Sigler Sibara.
Some great fiction and essays in this issue, especially “Thr Man on the Beach” by Josie Sigler Sibara and “Positive comments” by Owen King. If you like short stories you should subscribe to Ploughshares.
