Psychomaterialism

Psychomaterialism

Leonard Schwartz
0/5 ( ratings)
Psychomaterialism arose out of a desire to understand relationships in the most fundamental way possible. The authors used their behavioral training to notice how people responded to their circumstances. They used their psychoanalytic training to get at meanings. They used their experiential training to keep their feelings available. They looked at body movements, the way people affected one another, how people thought and felt, and then they learned to look at all of these things together. They identified the resulting whole as "energy." Over time, they learned how to track energy, see where it went, and how it behaved in all kinds of exchanges. Psychomaterialism is a way to track how energy connects to other energy, cuts off from other energy, and returns to itself. Energy becomes a richer source of information than the person's feelings, self-reports or ideas alone. It is finally a way to appreciate the other person in a relationship, and understand his needs-and ours as well-more intimately.

About the Authors:

Leonard Schwartz has been interested in finding some connection to spirituality outside of religion. His early love of philosophy was married to his interest in the physical sciences, leading to a solution: Psychomaterialism. In this view energy from the Cosmos, following clear rules, creates and develops a consciousness that determines human behavior. Applying this knowledge is seen as the underlying foundation of psychotherapy. Dr. Schwartz is the Director of New York Mental Health Services, LLD, and co-author, with Dr. Roslyn Schwartz, of Becoming A Couple.

George Bouklas has been interested in discovering the roots of psychology, and worked with Leonard Schwartz and the Intervision Group to discover where and how people come together in a shared experience. He considers Psychomaterialism a foundation for all the psychologies. Dr. Bouklas is in private practice in East Setauket, New York. He authored Psychotherapy With The Elderly: Becoming Methuselah's Echo.
