Nick Hanson is a legend. All of five feet tall, he is quite the man about town. Always has a fresh flower in his lapel. You’d look at him and you’d be inclined to underestimate him. He’s the most tenacious private eye in the City. Now in his eighties, he’s still a pistol. Still lives in North Beach. Still working every day.

Before he was Nick “the Dick”, he was Nicky Hanson – a poor kid from the Fillmore whose father ran a magic store in North Beach. Growing up in the Depression required tenacity, street smarts, and fast legs. These skills were developed as he held down several jobs: delivering newspapers, sweeping up at a local mortuary, handing out towels at the Italian Athletic Club, and playing 3-card monte. In his spare time, he played baseball with his classmate Joe DiMaggio. At 15, Nick unknowingly took on his first case – he had to retrieve a precious family heirloom from a local mobster to pay off his father’s gambling debts.
