After heartbreak in Spain he and Sofia travel to Melbourne where they soon join a group of artists led by Justus Jorgensen, an extraordinary visionary who is set on creating a utopian retreat where artists are free to live according to their values. Over time Jack and Sofia learn that there is a darker side to Jorgensen's personality and decide to leave, but never anticipate the dreadful event that tears their lives apart.

Book Three: Searching for Sofia - Broken by the tragedy that has beset his life, Jack seeks healing at Heide, supported by art patrons Summer and John Reed. When war breaks out Jack joins the 2nd AIF, sure that by going to Europe he might find Sofia. Fate has other plans for him, and though he reluctantly accepts a commission as a war artist this does not save him from the horrors of the battle-fields in the Middle East, Greece and Crete. When he returns a close association with Nora Heysen, Sydney Nolan and founder of the Australian War Memorial, John Treloar. Despite the passing of time, he cannot forget the woman whose sweet smile lingers in his heart.
