He also has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers, many in journals relating to Nature, Science, and PNAS. He is best known for his research on the evolution of the human head and the human body. Well educated, Lieberman got his Bachelor’s, Masters, and Ph.D. from Harvard University, and also received an M. Phil from Cambridge University. He has received several merit awards, was a Junior Fellow in the Harvard Society of Fellows, and before teaching at Harvard, was a professor at Rutgers University and the George Washington University. Lieberman was published in January of 2020. The book is divided into four sections, the first section of which is Inactivity. The second part is called Strength, Speed, and Power. The third section addresses Endurance and the fourth talks about Exercise in the Modern World. Exercised address twelve common myths we have about exercise, tracing our understanding of physical fitness and activity through the millennia of human history. The book’s goal is to help the reader understand why we are not drawn to exercise in the way it seems we are “supposed to be.” By approaching our understanding of physical fitness through a historical, anthropological perspective, we can better understand how we've reached the industrialized, modernized, medicalized version of exercise we have today. Lieberman also explains the science behind our body and how physical activity affects it in terms of health, longevity, and disease. He gives practical advice for how to choose to exercise well and in the right way, clarifying the waters of a commonly muddy pool. Exercised addresses exercise myths that often make us feel bad about ourselves, and clarifies much of the confusion around this topic so that we can start living simpler, healthier, and longer lives.
