Ms. Bee and Me: A journey of teamwork and trust (Grammy's Superhero)

Ms. Bee and Me: A journey of teamwork and trust (Grammy's Superhero)

The Grammy’s Superhero Series includes fascinating stories about the day-to-day life of a guide dog helping their visually impaired partner navigate the world. In each book, the reader experiences how a guide dog uses techniques and skills to safely communicate to the visually impaired partner. Readers learn how guide dogs maneuver around and point out obstacles, find items such as chairs or steps, and safely take control when crossing streets. In addition to learning the true story of how a guide dog does their job, the books include entertaining family stories of Grammy and her three grandchildren. The series is a heart-warming journey of unconditional love with an educational twist.
The author of Grammy’s Superhero Series, Wendy, lives in Royersford PA. She was born with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a progressive disease that will eventually take her sight completely. The vision loss started from the outer edges of her vision field and progressed to the center. Currently, Wendy has five percent of her central vision, and for her it is like looking through a paper towel roll with blackness around the outer edges. The disease also affects her eyes’ ability to filter out light, causing sight loss at night as well as in bright sunlight.
Since 1993, Wendy has been partnered with five Seeing Eye® dogs, all of whom accompanied her as she worked full time and took on life’s challenges as a proud disabled person. Wendy has worked professionally as a clerk at the local district court, an administrative assistant and customer service representative at Rhone Poulenc Rorer Pharmaceutical, and as a membership manager with the Girl Scouts of Eastern PA. Wendy is also a 2nd degree Black Belt in Seidokan Karate and has won many competitions. While working at Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, Wendy took advantage of the opportunity to continue her education, completing her BA degree in Communications at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA.
Wendy’s Seeing Eye dogs have helped her to live independently and achieve success— Every. Single. Day.
Today, Wendy is a dynamic public speaker for the Seeing Eye. After encouragement from her grandson, Callen, she decided to create the Grammy Superhero Series. Wendy hopes children and adults alike will enjoy the stories of her life and find learning how a Seeing Eye dog does their job interesting. The Grammy’s Superhero Series—and the many accomplishments Wendy has achieved as a visually impaired person—are living proof to her children and grandchildren that you can always achieve what you set your mind to, creating a life adventure of your very own!
