This being the first novel I have read by Conrad Williams,I have nothing to compare it to. I am about to begin reading his novel ONE,so watch this space
Whenever I read Conrad Williams, I always gain a sense of a writer who knows what he is doing, who can be relied upon to do something interesting with his material. That's happened again with his latest novel, an interesting character study that toys with one's expectations of horror and the supernatural.Loss of Separation is narrated by Paul Roan, a former commercial pilot who was forced to retire when a near miss in the air (the technical term for which gives the novel its title) shattered his...
a little 'The Wicker Man,' 'The Orphanage,' 'Night Strangers' (Chris Bohjalian) with some Conrad Williams touches, but not enough. this author has gone the way of Hollywood, i feel, since 2004. the sprawling nightmare landscapes and flesh-tearing threats have been folded away in favor of amazing coincidences around a few spots in a small town. the magic i had come to associate with Williams is only glimpsed in the treatment of 'separation' (from his girlfriend, Tamara, but more from his skin & s...
A deeply unsettling read. Conrad William's writing is superb, the characters fully realised and the novel itself an absolute page turner. The tension that is built throughout the novel keeps the slower paced parts rivetting and builds to a heart stopping climax. Some supernatural goings on are hinted at but never take full shape which for me made the suspense all the more palpable and didnt take away from the tension of the novel by making it cheesy. This for me is the kind of mystery i love to
Reading Conrad Williams’ book Loss of Separation leaves one feeling unsettled. The story is unsettling enough that you will find yourself thinking about it for days after reading. Paul Roan is an ex-airline pilot who, after moving to a coastal village with his girlfriend Tamara, is hit by a car while out walking. The car drives off leaving Paul to die. Discovered by Ruth, a resident of the village and a nurse, Paul is taken to the hospital where he undergoes extreme surgery to put his body back
Didn't end up much liking the story, but it did get me to keep reading.
