The Road to Belarusian Democracy: Relics of the Soviet Union From the Ashes of the 1986 Chernobyl Ecological Disaster.

The 2020 Belarusian Protests have dominated global headlines since their outbreak in early August, following the re-election of Alexander Lukashenko to office. Belarus is the lasting legacy of the Soviet Union communist regime, however as the outbreak of protests throughout recent history have shown, Belarus is ready for change. Whilst the road to democracy is long, those who stand in protest against fascism will not rest until their voices are heard. However, the politicisation of the Belarusian people did not happen in a vacuum. With political protest a foundational aspect of Belarusian modern origin, this book calls into question the role of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in creating a pro-active generation of campaigners ready to unite against authoritarianism.
