Centered in the world of thoroughbred horse racing, Tales of the Turf encompasses the life of Marty Moran, an undersized thirteen-year-old boy. He is adopted out of the orphanage for the sole purpose of being trained as a jockey. He is taught all phases of caring for and training racehorses. Expectations of him to attain greatness are short-lived, as he suffers a severe injury. Nevertheless, after recovering, he goes on to become just a mediocre jockey who finds enough success to live the so-called agood life.a After this, he finds hard times until picking himself up to become a successful trainer. But in this so-called aSport of Kingsa he finds more failures than winners, which eventually leaves him destitute once more. However, in the end, previous events in his life come to fruition, enabling him to come out an extremely happy winner.
