Bill Marx is the son of Harpo Marx, the silent member of the Marx Brothers, the one that played the Harp. Harpo Marx wrote a book entitledHarpo Speaks!, hence the title of Bill's book Son Of Harpo Speaks. Harpo was my favorite Marx Brother. I love his impishness. I was glad the book portrayed Harpo in a positive light and the love the son has for his father is palpable. Bill has led quite an interesting life himself. He was adopted at a young age and the story of finding his birth mother was ver...
I absolutely adored Harpo Speaks!, and I was hoping that this book would prove a pleasant companion, but I was pretty disappointed. This book is not particularly well constructed or written, it has some oddities, and it focuses a lot more on Bill's internal and emotional journeys in life than on his father or their family. There are some nice bits and pictures, but on the whole, it was a rather unsatisfying read.
Bill is a musician who can't write and admits it, but he has a good story to tell, and when he gets rolling, it's a page turner in places.
I really enjoyed this from Bill Marx. It's filled with his musical life, school days and family life. Plenty of photos too. Plus it seems that Bill Marx is truly a terrific, kind man with a gentle spirit. I can see where his father Harpo was the same way. The only thing I wish it had more of was talking about his siblings. Both when they were younger and now that they are older. And Bill is still playing piano at places! I hope to be able to go see him. I'm so glad he wrote this book. It's just
The audiobook was truly entertaining and gave interesting insight into the Marx family. Harpo was a kind soul. The book by his son had a cathartic feel. I think it was written to help him work through parts of his life.
It contains some Marx gems and also of equal interest - his musical career.

If you have read enough about the Marx Brothers to understand their careers and lives Son of Harpo Speaks is a nice addition to the collective narrative. Bill Marx gives you a good feeling of what it would have been like to have famous Hollywood parents. His admiration for them seems genuine too. It's not a Mommy Dearest portrayal, thank goodness. You come away thinking that Harpo was one of the all time great guys in Hollywood and they raised a fantastic son. The only disappointment was a lack
I am not sure if this audiobook is the same content as the printed book, but it is the potential differences that are the charm of this edition: music interludes, a cast of voices, etc. So, this is more an audio production than a straight reading of a book's content. Don't execpt any diry on the Marx borthers, although Bill does divulge some of Groucho's penis problems and Harpo's casual nudity. Rather, this is an open and easy-going recollection of talented musician adopted into the Harpo Marx
This is a nice follow up to Harpo Speaks. Bill Marx does a wonderful job telling his audience about his dad and mom. But overall, this book is about Bill's life, not just about his dad. There are many stories about Bill's musical education and his jobs in the music and acting world. And also, how he came to find out about his biological parents. Its a very interesting read, that I very much enjoyed spending sometime with.
I LOVED this book!! It was everything I wanted it to be. It occured to me that it might not be what I wanted after reading "Harpo Speaks!" about a dozen times (it's so much fun) but this book satisfied all my un-gelled(?) expectations. Wonderful. Thanks for writing it, Bill.
a surprise. I enjoyed this. Not nearly as much as Harpo Speaks, but it was very well done. Definitely recommend this.
A very interesting rad.
I liked the book
