Preface "At 2pm on May 2, 1942, somewhere in Malabang, Lanao del Sur, A Filipino met his death by musket fire at the hands of a ruthless enemy. The Filipino was Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos; the The Imperial Japanese Army in the Philippines. The cause of his his refusal to take allegiance to the Japanese regime. Shortly before the hour of execution, the veridct of death had been read to Abad Then he said to his son, "I have been sentenced to death. They will shoot me in a few minutes." When his son wept, Abad Santos comforted him, saying, "Do no cry. What is the matter with you? Show these people that you are brave. This is a rare opportunity for me to die for our country; not everybody is given that chance" With his death Abad Santos not only passed into martyrdom; he joined, inevitably, the group of authentic Filipino heroes who paid the supreme sacrifice in order that the Filipino people may live in dignity and greatness, in peace and freedom. It is both right and proper that a man such as Jose Abad Santos should be rendered the highest homage and given the deepest love and respect of his countrymen." INTRODUCTION Jose Abad Santos's life is one that should really be written about. For there is no doubt about the greatness of the man, the exemplary character of his deeds, and the integrity with shich he conducted himself in government work. But Jose Abad Santos is also a unique personality. His greatness has none of the awesome quality of the grand personage; as Mr. Aquino says about him, he was unspectacular and the testimony of his immediate superior in the Office of the Attorney General, Paredes, was that Abad Santos was "good but slow." In short, he is one of us; greatness does not alienate him from our democratic culture."
