She is given the journal of a girl her own age who was imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto during the time of the Holocaust and who never had a chance to celebrate her coming of age. Laura is to research young Sara Gittler’s life and then share her Bat Mitzvah with her “twin” by speaking of her at the ceremony. As she reads Sara’s journal entrie, which reveal both her disintegrating world and her willingness to fight the best she can, Laura comes to realize that in learning about Sara, she is also learning lessons she can apply to her own life. Like Laura, readers will be absorbed by Sara’s diary, which brings to life the fear, confusion, and courage of a young girl living through a frightening and terrible time.
