Fascinating introduction to the part that the Spanish courts of Al-Andalus played in the origins of Chretien de Troyes and the Grail materials. Much of the grail material has an origin in the rich metaphysical and philosophical environment that resulted from the fusion of Greek, Sufi and Kabbalistic thought. This book is a critical read for anyone interested in untangling the exquisite set of mysteries that comprise some of the earliest Grail stories.
Outstanding and dense book on the writings of Chretien de Troyes, an author as mysterious as his writing is perplexing. Of particular interest is the demonstration that at center, the Grail isn't Welsh but a complex layered story deriving its origins from Sufi thought, Greek and Islamic alchemy, as well as the Jewish traditions around mysticism so prevalent in Andalusia.
This is the most interesting well written book I have ever read.
