Myths of the Media

Myths of the Media

Edward Jay Epstein
0/5 ( ratings)
Forty years ago, William Shawn, the legendary editor of the New Yorker, asked Edward Jay Epstein, then a graduate student at Harvard, to investigate the reports in the New York Times, Washington Post, and other establishment newspapers that the Nixon administration had executing 28 members of the Black Panther party in what was tantamount to genocide. The resulting investigation demonstrated that the genocide story was a myth of the press, and five newspapers including the Washington Post issued editorial apologies for perpetuating the myth. It is also the origins of this book which includes investigations by Epstein debunking the myth of Watergate, the myth of Bin Laden at Tora Bora, the myth of Andropov, and the myth of the heroin epidemic. It is a study of how journalism loses its way.
