Captain Tsunezo Wachi was the commander of the Japanese garrison on Iwo Jima. His job was to prepare the island and fortify it against the impending invasion by US Marines. He was transferred back to Japan before the famous battle. After the war and after his imprisonment, he set out to memorialize those who fought in that epic battle, both Japanese and Americans. When he could no longer travel to the annual pilgrimage that he started, his daughter stepped in. Mrs. Rosa Ogawa's love for her warrior father led her to carry on his legacy by picking up where he left off. She shared her father's request for her and her family to become Catholic while raising her children and grandchildren. This story began as a pen pal relationship across the Pacific.
