Gorgeous drawings.
This is a typical song book. If you know the song "He's got the whole world in his hands," then you know the whole book. However, the illustrations are BREATH TAKING! Oh. My. Goodness. I don't like spiritual books, even if they just subtly say He or Him to refer to god, but I'd own this book just for the beautiful pictures. Unfortunately, I now have that darn song stuck in my head!
10* art5* words/songReally the most gorgeous, big illustrations, and a lovely feel-good, sing-along book.

The illustrations are just gorgeous!
This book was less intriguing than the other books I chose for Kadir Nelson. It is a picture book showing Kadir's interpretation of the title song. The only words in the book are the lyrics to the song. While it is not a storybook like the other books I chose, the illustrations are wonderful and I believe children would enjoy it.
Kadir Nelson beautifully illustrates the spiritual "He's Got the Whole World in his Hands". This book reminds me of one of my favorite activities as a child. In 3rd grade our music teacher had us listen to Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" and we were all given a lyric to illustrate. I got the line "They'll learn much more than I'll ever know" and drew a child bringing home an A paper to their mom. Then all of the parents and kids got together and the music teacher did a slide show of o...
I love the illustrations that accompany this spiritual and appreciate the author's note about the song.
Kadir Nelson built the text of He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands with portions of lyrics from the famous spiritual, “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.” Nelson’s illustrations of the incredibly large, somewhat overwhelming topics of the song are depicted from the perspective of a young African American boy, who is surrounded by the comforting presence of family as he observes the powerful concepts of the roaring oceans, the distant moon, and the citizens of faraway nations, concepts whic...
Kadir Nelson's continued perfection of noted, influential pieces of history is once again portrayed in "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands." "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" is a book written, and illustrated, by Kadir Nelson. From the cover, the reader knows that what is to come once they open the book, is beautifully done work by Kadir Nelson. Nelson takes the spiritual, made well-know song by most Americans, into an illustrated picture book. He breaks down the song and illustrates d...
Kadin Nelson’s He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands is a beautifully illustrated book based solely on the song. Wonder way to repurpose a uniting tune. During a church service where children have often used books, this was incorporated as the praise song for the day sung by the Pastor and their children via zoom. This was a pleasant surprise while visiting this church that records their service for rebroadcast I enjoy watching outside my service at my church. The illustrations are beautifully pa...

When I plucked this book off the shelf and saw the picture of the little boy smiling on the cover, I couldn't refuse to put it down. What an adorable book! This would be a great book for a child who is exploring their religion and wants to see and feel a deeper connection. I love that the book is the lyrics to the song "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" because it's up to the reader(s) to decide whether they want to read or sing the lyrics. Topics: religion, music, singing, God, world, geog...
I've decided to read 29 children's book during Black History month 2016. This was book #27. He's Got the Whole World in His Hands by Kadir Nelson. Nelson also illustrated this book using the lens of a child. The artwork is vivid, colorful and impactful to the story. The historical significance of the song is described at the end. Wonderful display of our African American culture.
Even though there is a "He" and the implication is that it's God, and I'm agnostic/secular/humanist, I feel comfortable reading this aloud (well, singing this aloud) at story time, because in each luminous and amazing illustration, there is a "he" who fits the text, as an ordinary human being as well. And even though I've read another beautiful version that uses "We" We've Got the Whole World in Our Hands, Nelson's images that focus on a black boy and a black dad are so unique and so beautiful,
This book is an illustrated interpretation of the well-known spiritual "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands." Kadir Nelson's illustrations provide both a broad world-view that is often thought of with this song, as well as providing an intimate interpretation through the main character and his family. The first page features a NASA-like image of the sun just peeking over the earth as seen from space, with the words, "He's got the whole world in His hands." Combined with this majestic image are...
