An criticism of the US foster care system and a tragic true tale of a murder-suicide that killed six kids.
At the base of a cliff next to the Pacific Coast Highway on March 26, 2018, rescue crews found the dead of two mothers and six children inside a crushed Vehicle. The first investigation into the collision resulted in the conclusion that it was a murder-suicide. It was out that married white couple Jennifer and Sarah Hart had adopted six Black children from two households in Texas between 2006 and 2008. When the parents removed the kids from school and relocated across the nation, a pattern of abuse and neglect was occurring behind the scenes. Unfortunately for everyone involved, it quickly became clear that Texas state officials knew very little about the two people to whom they had granted custody of six children.
We Were Once a Family, by Roxanna Asgarian, is a revelation of fragile lives and a shattering exposé of the foster care and adoption institutions that generated this catastrophe in the tradition of Adrian Nicole LeBlanc's Random Family and other famous works of investigative journalism. Asgarian, a Houston-based writer, broke new ground by making the biological families central to the tale. As the story progresses, we see the author come up against the unyieldingness of a governmental agency that takes away thousands of children annually in the name of child welfare yet often fails to explore alternatives. When investigating why children of color are being taken from their families, she uncovered systemic racism and corruption. As a consequence, we have a compelling story and a well-researched condemnation of a system that continues to fail America's most vulnerable children, so destroying their lives and the lives of their families.
