This is a beautiful book. This book was a part of my children's large home library and one of the many books that I am definately buying again to add to my granddaughters library of book that I am starting for her as part of her babyshower gift.
You can always help a friend out - great lesson.
This book keeps growing on my as kids keep asking for it to be read again and again. It's great for a small group read aloud, with so many possibilities for acting it out, counting etc. And then the end is a bit of a mystery that stumped the 2 & 3 year olds the first time we read it. Now that they know the answer they love to point out the clues.
I cut out a large red umbrella from red felt and some wrapping paper images of animals and a little girl image from a magazine and backed these with flannel. I then retold this story using the flannel pieces. Sharp and fun pictures highlight this story of a poor little ant and his friends who seek shelter under a mushroom during a downpour. The question is: What will happen to the mushroom in the rain? Children will enjoy the pictures of the animals as they crowd themselves under the mushroom.
Seeing that this book was based on a communist era Russian piece, I can't help but imagine the original readers, huddled in their subdivided one room apartments!Perhaps this book was intended to encourage them to enjoy their crowded living conditions :-)

I like it because it gets bigger, bigger, bigger, bigger, bigger, bigger, bigger, bigger.
A classic! A little ant hides under a mushroom during a rainstorm, and then has to make room for other critters. The animals can't figure out how they all could fit under the mushroom until a frog asks them if they know what happens to a mushroom in the rain. They grow! I told this story with flannel board art for a ducks- and rain-themed program for both Spanish and bilingual story times. This is a good story to use when teaching about plants and how things grow, too.
Meredith taught me to tell the story as a prop story with an umbrella and puppets. It really adds to the story.
preS-1st, maybe 2ndSuch a fabulous book. Well-paced. Great story. Clear pictures. The only thing that would make this better is making a BIG book out of it!
This book is a good book to read and sequence the story. It is also similar to the the Jan Brett story, The Mitten. I compare/contrast this story using a VENN diagram with my Kindergarten students.
My little one was enthralled. He loved it. I thought it was cute and average, but he really appreciated it, so +1 star.

This was adapted from the Russian Pod Gribom (Under the Mushroom) of Vladimer Grigor'evich Suteyev. The story is cute and illustrates cooperation and sharing.
This picture books is quickly becoming one of my youngest daughter's favorite. It has started raining and an ant hides under a mushroom for cover. Great book for "rain" themed storytime. Ant hides under a mushroom and is joined by other animals looking for shelter. They are amazed after the storm that there was room for all of them under that tiny mushroom. A wise frog asks them don't they know what happens to mushrooms in the rain? The animals look around and realize that the rain made the mushroom grow!
The story and illustrations are adorable.
