Sally Sloan and Nat Wilkerson of Amite County, marry and have children. Bret, Sally‘s nineteen year old cousin kills Nat and marries the thirty-year-old nurse in Liberty, Mississippi. He loses the family farm in a game of chance and moves to Fort Worth in the late 1880's. Bret Sloan, Sally's gambler husband, starts a gambling house and uses the Wilkerson ex-slaves as prostitutes. Charles Ray tries to kill Bret. Bret moves to Houston and opens up a house of prostitution. D.H. and W.L. go back to Amite County by hopping freights. D.H. kills a tramp. This story tells about the Wilkerson sons - D.H. and W.L.- moving to LaPlata County, Colorado, after W.L. contacts lung disease. This book is about ex-slaves, murder and eventually D.H. becoming a lay preacher. Sally is post Civil War's sequel to the heroine of AMITE COUNTY, by Luther Butler. Just for the hell of it the author has made an attempt at Black English spoken in the period. No offense meant.
