Flavius has come to Athens when his father was appointed procurator by Nero. He is ill, and has visions both of a soldier in Alexander's army and of a Roman tribune assigned to his father. As time goes on, he learns more about both men, one living and one dead. Finally, he is "exorcized" and free of his visions.
