Although this is showing the vast differences when moving between 2 different countries and cultures, I think any kids who are moving would appreciate the book. It talks about leaving behind old friends and making new. It's also great for talking about the differences between Korea and America.
I loved this book for its realistic and sympathetic mood that has a reassuring message and multicultural appeal. As Jangmi leaves her hometown, you can feel as if you can feel the sadness she’s feeling inside. As she leaves her best friend behind, Kisuni, you can sense the fear, the emptiness in her as she says goodbye to her. These are realistic, genuine feelings that kids often face when leaving their hometown and moving to a new place, nonetheless, a new country. Moving around is common to an...
A sweet story about a Korean girl who has to adjust to her new life in America. I like that while the main character is mostly optimistic about her new home, you can tell she still misses her old home. This brings realism to the story while still helping kids know that it’s ok to miss your old home.
This book is about a family that is moving to America from Korea. It involves two friends that make a promise to keep in touch regardless of the distance between them. The two friends sit under a tree, and they talk. This story highlights the difficulty of moving to another country while leaving everything you know, love, and have behind. This is something that students in the United States experience often. This applies especially to young students who have just moved, and the adjustment has no...
Shin Dang Dong is the way to address some area in Souel but the rhythm is entertaining. This book was published in 2005 but the story is based on more past ago. For example, Kisumi is old name and Koreans don't wear Hanbok on special day anymore except very strict families which think tradition is important. Because of this reason, this book is a nice book to learn traditional Korean culture. Young children usually have a hard time when they move to other regions and this book portrayed it vivid...
Genre: Contemporary Realistic Fiction2nd-3rd gradeThis book made me think of all the emotions that would come with moving to a new country. It was interesting to hear about the differences between American and Korean cultures. Also, in the book, the girl didn't want to adopt her American name Rose. The book shows that it takes time for people of other cultures to adapt and learn how they fit in the new enviorment.
Jangmi can't bear the thought of moving to America from Korea. She does not want to leave her home, her favorite willow tree, or her best friend. America does not have "chummy melons" or monsoons. The floors of their new house in Massachusetts will be cold and wooden, not like the warm Ondal floors in Korea. But when she arrives at her new home, Jangmi meets a neighbor that laughs just like Kisuni and a beautiful maple tree in her back yard. The Park sisters do a wonderful job showing the reader
Good-Bye, 382 Shin Dang Dong is a story about a little girl named Jangmi who immigrated to America with her parents. Jangmi was not happy in having to move to Massachusetts. The first word Jangmi learned was Rose. Jangmi's parents told her that was the meaning of her name in English. Jangmi felt strange about the new place she will in. Jangmi felt homesick and missed the monsoons and rice paper doors. Jangmi was learning to accept her new home. Her neighbors were friendly and welcoming. Jangmi m...
Good-Bye, 382 Shin Dang Dong is a story about a little girl named Jangmi and her family who move to America and leave everything she has ever known behind. Jangmi dislikes everything about her new home and compares it to what she used to have back home in Korea. It isn't until she unpacks a box labeled "special things" that she feels more at home with her new surroundings and new found friend. Frances and Ginger Park did a great job depicting the struggle and fear a child faces when moving somew...
Another great book about Korean culture and immigrants. Includes Korean words and ways of life. Love the colorful pictures as well!
This was a fantastic read and I really enjoyed it. It was something that went beyond my expectations and did a great job at explaining what this child is going through as he starts his move to America. The author, Frances Park, does a great job with her words to pull at your emotion and starts off the book with a hook to draw you in and learn about this child's journey. For the classroom I think this would be a great addition for circle time, especially if you just had a student move here from Ko...
I give this story 4.5 stars. I was choked up throughout most of the story. Imagine leaving your home, your friends, and everything familiar to move across the world where everything looks, feels and sounds strange. It is a touching story and a good conversation starter.
Goodbye 382 Shin Dang Dong is an incredible picture book written by Frances Park. Park depicts the struggle of a young girl moving from her old home in Korea into a new home in America. This book has rich cultural pictures and does an incredible job depicting the Korean culture. The picture book would be a great read aloud for any elementary classroom!
Jangmi is so dissapointed. She is moving leaving Korea to come to America. She must say goodbye to her house at 382 Shin Dang Dong street and everything else she loves about Korea. She is really sad to be leaving her best friend,Kisuni.Every child whose family must move can make a connection to this story. This cross cultural journey will enlighten readers to the positive aspects of change.
Good-Bye, 382 Shin Dang Dong is my read-aloud book. It’s a story about a little girl, Jangmi, who can’t bear the idea of leaving her home in Korea. Her family has everything packed and they host a good-bye party for family and friends before their flight is scheduled to leave. Jangmi and her best friend, Kisuni, sit under Jangmi’s willow tree one last time while they reassured each other that they would be best friends forever. They also figured out that when one of them was sleeping, the other
Sweet story my kids and I loved. A book that will reassure children about moving houses.
This is another is large collection of books focused on the adjustment that life-changing moves have on a child. It's well written and the illustrations are well done. It's a solid book.
This book is about a young girl who struggles to come to terms with moving to America and leaving behind her home and friends in Korea. It follows Jangmi from the fearful moment she learns her family is moving to a new country to the moment she starts feeling a little more comfortable in her new home, such as when her neighbor Mary comes over to welcome her family and they share moments of laughter together. So many immigrant children can relate to Jangmi's feelings of fear (and potential loss o...
Like "Grandfahter's Jouney", this book is also a personal story of the author herself. It is based on the real story of her older sister, and how she felt about leaving her home where her family and friends are, to a new world. I thought this book gives another in-depth point of view of an immigrant students, and some of struggles that they often face. As an immigrant myself, I found this book very appealing for many reasons. One of the reasons is that Shin Dang Dong, the place where the main ch...
It’s a beautiful book speaking about migration. It talks about leaving family, friends and familiarity and embarking on something new and unsure.
