'Headlock' is set in a town in a children's institution in Lancashire, England in 1961. Martha Chisdale, the Senior Girl and of Jamaican parentage, is preparing for the All-Schools Championships in the 100 yards, which shatters her self-image and the public image of the orphanage. Her 'little brother', Johnny is being sent away for bad behaviour and the Matron Foster's deputy is having an affair with the parish vicar. Under a corrupt Town Hall, Matron Foster tries to ignore, then fathom and then subdue the forces that gather to ruin her career and close the home she has created for disadvantaged children, Croxford House.
