Rückblickend korrigiere ich meine Wertung um einen Stern nach unten und frage mich, warum ich das Buch überhaupt beendet habe. Irgendwas Gutes muss es gehabt haben, doch was? Die Figuren sind konstruiert und durchlaufen keine nennenswerte Entwicklung, obwohl es ausreichend Gelegenheit gegeben hätte. Noch nicht einmal die titelgebende Mary, die tatsächlich einiges durchmacht. Ereignisse hätte es ausreichend viele gegeben, doch werden diese so unaufgeregt und mit wenig Gefühl für Tempo und Dramatu...
Tedious. I didn't hate it - I would've given up on it if I had. But I stuck with it, as I actually thought it was going somewhere.....but it didn't! I skim read the last 50 pages or so as I just wanted to get to the end and move on...so maybe I missed something - or maybe not.

These "hitting the nail on the head" lines are part of the reason I keep reading this book.Greenlaw lets this book get away from her. She puts too much effort in twisting the plot, in attempting to hang onto the reader by withholding information that soon becomes less interesting anyway. She needed a better editor.
