High summer is flattering Redhill just now - it's gloriously hot. Life, however has not treated Luke Ribbons so kindly ever since he made a major gaffe in the post office on pension day. So, rebuffed by Fortune, he's drifting, away from parents, parish, old friend and - with luck - into the arms of Pearl Slattery... to sink into her alluringly fragrant bosom and be smothered in soft, blousing, sweet mother-love.

Unfortunately, Pearl doesn't share this romantic vision. Luke is dazzled by sunshine, the Slattery brood, the smell of freshly-cut grass, cheap perfume, warm beer, burnt toast and witch doctors' promises. It's as hard to live in Surrey as it is anywhere else.
