Anton Ginzburg: At the Back of the North Wind

Anton Ginzburg: At the Back of the North Wind

Jeffrey Kastner
4/5 ( ratings)
Anton Ginzburg: At the Back of the North Wind presents the culmination of the artist's journey in search of Hyperborea, a mythical region thought to be located -beyond the Boreas- . Mixing artifact with mythology, and history with invention, the project's wide-ranging material includes a 45-minute film and still photographs from the forests of Oregon, to St. Petersburg and the White Sea in Russia; sculptures; topological maps; and site-specific framed works. The book's supplementary materials include installation shots of the artist's exhibition at the 2011 Venice Biennale; newly commissioned essays by Jeffrey Kastner and curator Matthew Drutt; a conversation between Boris Groys and the artist; and a process documentation section including notes, objects, photographs and other ephemera. Encapsulating the exhibition's diverse range of works within the space of a printed object, the catalogue cover and interior pages interleave full-bleed imagery of the mythical Hyperborean red cloud, in reference to the ethereal dreamscape of Ginzburg's otherworldly exploration.
