Truly enjoyed the quality of the prose, the evocation, and Ben's boyfriends. Much to admire and enjoy, marred by a slow start. But if you stay the course, it's absolutely worth it! I am only discounting the star count because I didn't give George Saunders five, either. Sorry, Alex. You probably deserve better.
A frustrating book. The author abandoned the most interesting characters less than 100 pages in. For the rest of the story, the protagonist bounces around with an assortment of unlikable manipulators.
I read this book in a haze of sleep deprivation and moving in liminal spaces while traveling. I was there in the story, the story was there in my dreams. It was a story of dreams and change, as with so many of Jeffers' stories it was there exactly when I needed it. I don't know if it's luck and timing, or if his stories twist and adapt when I'm not looking, always turning to offer the characters I need to relate to, the signs I need to find my own catalysts. This is one of those novels I needed and read at just the right time. Not so much a classic fantasy as it is about a man who lives in a fantasy world. Still it was nominated for a Lammy in the SF/Fantasy/Horror category. Ben is a young man fresh out of college, in his first job, commuting fifty miles one way every day.
