I was fortunate enough to interview the writer, Joshua Dysart, for our youtube channel. Check it out here! https://youtu.be/NVSJLjQqEz8 Be sure to subscribe.100% best Valiant book I’ve read yet.Harbinger once again proves it’s fucking incredible. These characters are top notch. Flamingo, Kris, Torque, Zephyr and Peter Stanchek... each one gets their moment in the sun. They’re all outstanding. This deliberately swerves away from tired old superhero tropes, and yet it somehow manages to capture the...
Another Valiant comic and another valiant entry. Harbinger is definitely one of the best superhero titles currently running, and I'm a big fan of a lot of the New 52. Valiant knows what they are doing with their characters, and Harbinger is just so awesome. I remembered really liking the first volume I read and I couldn't really remember why when diving into this second volume. As the story went on it became clear to me again why this is such a great series, and it's because the characters are s...
I am LIKING this Harbinger series!Valiant had a 41 issue run of this story starting in 1992. This GN collection is from the second volume which ran 25 issues from 2012 to 2015. There is a new volume 3 which has run 8 issues and started in 2021. I may check that out. This second issue of the Harbinger volume 2 collects issues 6-10.This was fun and was even better than the very cool first GN.Peter has escaped Harada and is building a team of like minded potential heroes and this recruiting drive is...
Find this review and many more at Geekritique!Review of Harbinger, Vol. 1: Omega RisingValiant's immensely fantastic Harbinger series continues with Volume Two, a 5 issue arc titled 'Renegades'. And although it doesn't live entirely up to the standard of the first volume, it feels like a well put together second act. Renegades collects issues 6-10 of the 25 issue run.Previously we learn that Peter Stanchek is capable of unlocking 'latents' minds so that they can use their unique psionic powers.
This chapter makes the main character a little less deplorable, but not because of his own choices, but rather because he is suddenly surrounded by good people who believe in him. The story feels a little bit lie those "realistic" takes on superheroes from the 80s you still find in the 25¢ bin in comic book stores, but I have the feeling that these characters are going to be around for longer. Valiant is taking the time to flesh them out, and though many start as cringeworthy stereotypes, they g...
Better and better! We get introduced to some new characters with some pretty cool powers. Or, at least, they were new to me. I'm sure those of you who are familiar with Valiant comics recognized these guys right off the bat from earlier incarnations. But for those of us who are newbies?Great introduction!I honestly can't believe that I've not heard more about this publisher or this world. Seriously. So far, I'm just blown away. So, this motley group of superpowered teenagers is going to take on th...
Fantastic and empowering!
Love Faith! The rest of the renegades are cool too.
Peter, Kris and Faith go on a recruitment drive in their war against Toyo Harada. Through these two volumes Dysart pretty much follows the plot of the 90's version, but with darker undertones. There's a lot more of a moral gray tones in this as all of the characters, even our "good" guys do some reprehensible things as they try and figure things out. The only honest to goodness "good" character is Faith. She's a bright ray of sunshine shining through dark clouds. She has quickly become one of my...
A small step down from Volume 1. Still interested to see where it all goes.
More action than in the previous volume, this X-Men group is a lot more realistic and we can see Charles Xavier as a bad man.
If the first volume of Harbinger was about introducing Peter Stanchek and Toyo Harada, this second volume really kicks things into high gear as Peter heads across the country to recruit other Psiots like himself in order to take down Harada once and for all. Each issue in this volume is told from a different character's perspective, which really helps introduce them to the reader, so we get one each from Peter, Kris, Faith, and newcomers Flamingo and Torque as Peter's crusade against Harada sweep...
Peter adds on more team members to the psiot "good guys". I enjoyed seeing the origin and earlier history of Faith. I found the dialog a bit action-movie bland and quipping but it was still a fun page turning read. The change in artist across the collected issues was slightly jarring but I realize that's the way non creator owned projects go. A solid read.
The ideas aren't original but the execution is awesomely good! Holy well developed characters batman! This is the best hero team series I've read.
Now THIS is what I'm talking about. A badass showdown? Character development? Plot progression in a timely manner? Yes, yes, and YES. The only real negative is some of the characters are a bit too over the top at parts but overall, this is a much better volume than the first. Especially adding in the showdown having weight instead of feeling like a add in.
I think the title really started to catch its stride in this volume. It's still not my favorite book out there, but I definitely see some potential. If nothing else, I like the premise. Wide variety of powers, teaming up for good and bad, all that jazz. There's also some really nice lines that are just witty enough. On the flip side, there's a lot of lines that feel forced and fake. Overall I have realized I like the supporting cast much more than the leads. Peter and Kris and Harada don't do an...
Good read but still fairly torn about the Kris/Peter stuff.World: The art is still meh, but it does it's job well, it's just not my cup of tea. The world building here is solid with a lot of background and context for the Renegades, it really puts weight into the story. Solid.Story: The story is good and moves super fast, it's a very enjoyable read. It's paced well and the dialog is strong with good solid emotions. I really enjoyed it. The morally grey tone of the entire book is good and sets it...
This volume is a 'gathering the team' book, as Peter pulls together Kris and activates two new Psiots. Oddly enough, though, the book doesn't focus on Peter at all. It's mainly Kris who leads, from her decision to join with, to organizing and directing their actions with the others, and putting their assailants on the defensive. There are a couple of strong action sequences, and most everyone gets a chance to shine, but a lot of the book is flashbacks or introduction of the new characters, and t...
So now we assemble a team of not-so-super-heroes who are instantly hunted and in immediate danger. But I love the team of 'losers' Peter goes after and they have some great lines ("SUCK IT, BAD GUYS! I'm aliiive! Isaac Newton in the house!!!")I just came to find out Faith's backstory and how her previous relationship ended... but now I want to know what happens next.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I received it in the June 2016 box from Comic Bento, so I didn't get a chance to read volume 1 yet. There is an opening page that gives some background for readers like me that didn't pick up the first volume, which is quite nice. Even without that, the book is pretty friendly to new readers. This book details how the group known as the Renegades formed. It includes some fallout from the first book, which I thought was detailed enough here that I could get by with...
