All great movements in history have been based on ideas. The present total war in which the United States is engaged is naturally no exception. The war and the peace will be won through the strength of the wills and the intelligence of men and the underlying ideas which motivate them. Now therefore, when everything we have and everything we stand for is at stake, there can be no more profitable undertaking for Americans than to take mental stock of themselves, to assay the intangible forces which govern our present and our future, and to endeavor to see the world clearly and see it whole.
