The Chippewa began as part of the Algonquian people of the Great Lakes region. They lived in what is now Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, and Oklahoma and parts of Canada. There are more than 100,000 Chippewa living in the United States and more than 60,000 in Canada.
