A terrific set of stories that tell as much about the human experience as they unintentionally talk about why we never really want to make America great again as it was clearly perceived to be in 1963 by their self-appointed gate-keepers. There is an ethno-centric certainty the editor used in his compilation of stories and the message he is trying to convey is of the certainties of superiority in the Western Ideal even if that ideal includes only the editor’s belief in people-like-him. The intro...
An interesting collection of short stories and excerpts from novels. While most of the stories are time-tried classics and well worth re-reading, I feel the collection´s value as an introduction to young(er) twenty-first century readers is somewhat dated. Clearly, this anthology was compiled before the age of so-called political correctness -only white male authors are included (four American, eight British, four French and one Russian writer). I even
Why would I rate a book that forms part of an awesome series like this only four stars? Because one of the aims of the Gateway to the Great Books series is to serve as an entry point to the ideas presented in the Great Books. Several of these pieces of writing were challenging, and I'm not sure the effort I put into reading them was worth the pay-off I received. That said, this volume has introduced me to many classic authors who I know by name and who I've long felt that I should have read them...
Was the intention of this series to introduce literature to young audience? According to some sources, this series is "Although the editors maintained that many selections were appropriate to readers as young as seventh-grade students, the set included a fair amount of material challenging for the most experienced readers." But the intention to "hook" readership is somewhat obvious from its friendly type-settings, editorial introductions, graphics, and suspiciously "action-packed" stories. I ima...
